    Default Progress Report on my Renault Ondine in Bolivia

    In the 41 days I've spent in Tarija where I play with my car projects in my spare time I've managed to get a few things done.

    This is the way it started a year ago.

    Continued.....

    Bearings weren't real good


    Nor the A-frames


    Since it had been sitting down in the mud for 20+ years, the brakes were stuck and rusted




    After sandblasting and straightening, it was time to paint the suspension




    A little help from a local machine shop to fabricate the eccentrics and bushings for the steering.

    Then one Saturday morning I called a neighbor and wrapped a fire hose around the engine and we pulled it.




    Water pump and whole insides rusted away


    And the block cracked and welded along the side, but the bridge between cylinders 2 and 3 was also cracked, causing elongation of the sleeves. and scraping of the pistons.



    So the block is now welded


    Another evening after work I pulled the rear suspension

    continued....

    Transmission oil was more like molasses with rust on the lower parts.


    Engine support cracked


    So after more welding, it was time to protect the soon to be restored parts.







    Time to rectify some transmission teeth and assemble it.



    Then clean up the manifolds




    And the rear grill





    There are more pics on my site. I hope to get back the end of May to do a little more. Still need a few parts that should be coming from Argentina soon.

    I got back to Tarija and have managed to steal some time to work on the car. Actually got a little don a few months ago that are on my site, although I never got around to posting them here.

    I got most of the electrical parts I'll need to convert to 12 volt, plus the steering wheel, light controls, water pump and thermostat, rack & pinion, and cylinder sleeve to replace the one that was not salvageable. Plus some more.

    I cleaned up the cylinders and the pistons, found that when it had been put together 20+ years ago (although never driven much) one of the oil rings was missing a piece, so had to order rings. Here are a few pics. lots more on my site in month 14 and 18.






    Polished up the alternator


    honed the sleeve


    Pulled the stainless roof trim and started taking out dents and polishing (details on my site)



    Now I'm back and took the shell to the body shop to patch the undercarriage while I assemble the engine and power train. Hope to be able to install it all before I go back to Santa Cruz at the end of the month.
