Default Renault production in Canada 1965-1973

Renaults were produced from 1965-1973 at the SoMA (Société de Montage Automobile) plant in St-Bruno-de-Montarville in Québec from CKD kits sourced from France. The plant was run by the provincial government as a Crown Corporation. They would buy the CKD kits from Renault (and Peugeot), assemble the cars and then sell them back to Renault Canada Ltée. The site of the plant is still Renault Canada's head office, for the tourist car "Euro Drive" program.

SoMA produced Renaults for both the Canadian and USA markets. The 2765 Peugeot 404s produced at SoMA were only for the Canadian market.

    1966: 2,900 - of which 980 were Peugeot 404s, the rest Renault 8 and 10
    1967: 4,563 - of which 1,240 were Peugeot 404s, the rest Renault 8, 10 and 16
    1968: 7,056 - of which 545 were Peugeot 404s - their production stopped by April - the rest Renault 8, 10 and 16
    1969: 9,920 - all Renault 8, 10, 16
    1970: 7,500 - all Renault 10, 12, 16
    1971: 10,690 - all Renault 10, 12, 16
    1972: 9,549 - all Renault 12, 16
    1973: 1,891 - the last of the production was Renault 12, 16

There was labour unrest at this site and some of the cars made there were intentionally sabotaged by the workers - punch marks on crankshaft journals for example. I had a 1971 Renault 12 1289 cc with this problem, but it only cost me $50 so meh!
